Design Molded Plastics Provides Rapid Prototyping With Enhanced 3D Printing Capabilities

Design Molded Plastics has added 3D printing to its capabilities, offering customers the ability to receive a quick, flexible, and cost-efficient method for prototyping, model making, and small production runs.

With this new capability, Design Molded can now combine a highly accurate look, feel, and functionality with nearly immediate turnaround. Moving directly from design files to production parts without the need for tooled components, rapid prototyping is an innovative tool for designers at many points in the product creation life cycle, including:

  • Ideation and concept
  • Detailed design
  • Design freeze
  • Design validation
  • Production setup
  • Short production runs

The new 3D printing technology – Objet500 Connex from Stratasys – provides true product rendering realism with more than 100 material options, 14 within a single job. It can print three base-model materials simultaneously. An enhanced design offers efficiencies in material changeover, finish, detailing, and toughness, as well as over-molding on the product structure in very thin layers for model accuracy.

The printer has a build envelope of 19.3” x 15.4” x 7.9” (500 x 400 x 200 mm), which is substantial enough to support large models or numerous parts at the same time.

This new capability supports the value-added, full-service engineering, tooling, and manufacturing services that Design Molded provides to its highly diversified customer base. Customers can expect full support throughout the duration of the project, now starting in the conceptualization phase. This new technology will not only assist designers and engineers in effectively demonstrating multi-material components in complex or assembled products, it will also allow for the generation of product enhancement or improvement ideas. Design Molded’s engineering group will be able to make recommendations for improved part functionality, reliability, and moldability, as well as cost-saving opportunities.

Founded in 1985, Design Molded Plastics is a custom injection molder with a reputation for providing outstanding technical capabilities and the highest quality manufactured products through the use of automated injection molding equipment. The Plastic News and Crain's Cleveland Business magazines

Design Molded Plastics Featured in Crain’s Cleveland Business and Plastics News

In November, Design Molded Plastics announced the purchase of several new machines and the forthcoming expansion. The news media has taken notice, leading to feature articles in both Crain’s Cleveland Business and Plastics News.

In addition to reporting on our latest news, the publications heralded Design Molded Plastics as a manufacturer that has led the charge in bringing work back to the U.S. and as a leader in plant cleanliness and energy efficiency.

As written by reporter Jessica Holbrook, “The entire workforce contributes to keeping the plant in top form. Maintenance workers on each shift are charged with keeping the plant clean, and every mold goes through a rigorous cleaning and repairing process before being used.”

Design Molded Plastics Adds Capabilities to Support New Business

Design Molded Plastics, a custom thermoplastic injection molding company, has increased its technical facilities to support recently awarded new business from its customers. To support this rise in production requests, DMP has purchased four axis robots and five new injection molding machines.

Co-owners Diane Hanson and Jay Honsaker said they are willing to support new projects with the necessary capital investment that will allow DMP to continue to grow with its customers in the coming years.

In addition to the new capital equipment, Design Molded Plastics is expanding its warehouse and office facility. Hanson and Honsaker expect to break ground on a 20,000-plus square foot addition in spring 2013 and plan to have it completed in fall 2013.

“This expansion will position us to service our customer’s growth for many years,” said Honsaker.

Founded in 1985, Design Molded Plastics is a family-owned business with a reputation for providing outstanding technical capabilities and finely manufactured products through the use of automated injection molding equipment. Design Molded Plastics Reduces Carbon Footprint
with Lighting Project

Design Molded Plastics just completed a lighting project converting their 400 watt metal halide high bay fixtures to 6 lamp, T5 (HIF) high intensity fluorescent fixtures. Following the conversion of their 110,000 sq. ft. facility, they were able to reduce their energy costs to illuminate their manufacturing and warehouse areas by 46% and reduce by 60% the cost to illuminate their offices, which calculate to a $27,000/year reduction on their energy costs.

This lighting retrofit project reduced their carbon footprint in excess of 302 tons annually, while dramatically increasing their plant light level from 45 to 77 foot candles.

“After much research we contracted with Bob Taussig of ROI Energy Solutions in Hudson, Ohio to handle our conversion. Bob’s personal engagement quite frankly made our decision an easy one. He followed through with his commitments with professionalism and integrity, which are diminishing traits in today’s business environment. Bob’s priorities were unwavering and consistent with Design Molded Plastics philosophy of conducting business. We couldn’t be more delighted with our finished project.” explained president, Jay Honsaker. “We were even able to incorporate motion sensors to save additional energy for areas of our facility which have minimal use during our 24 x 7 operation.”

Not only was there a considerable reduction in energy cost to illuminate their facility; a lucrative rebate from First Energy and an accelerated tax deduction allowed by the IRS as part of EPAct05 also made this an excellent payback for the Cleveland- and Akron-area manufacturing company.

Design Molded Plastics is a privately held, world class injection molding company serving the medical equipment, protective equipment, automotive and home appliance industries as well as many others in NE Ohio since 1985. They employ over 120 associates and have grown every year since its inception in 1985. For more information go to http://www.designmolded.com.
